This is irrelevant for most of you, but if you'd like to read the most ridiculous conversation about radiation and iodine ever, and how it's directly related to how natural birth advocates are bullies, here are the links to the screen caps:
Thank you. I was reading your fb and couldn't figure out what was going on until I realized there were comments deleted. Sometimes I'm slow.
The thing is -- I know that rational disagreement is FINE with you. So if she has good info and wants to share it in a reasonable way you're cool with it. But if she wants to make unsubstantiated claims and run away when questioned...
I was genuinely interested in where she was getting her information, because none of the sites I would consider reputable had anything like that on them.
This is just a teensy example. The AIDS denial stuff (She has actually said HIV and AIDS aren't related!), the instructing women to stop taking HIV meds during pregnancy/breastfeeding (when HIV meds actually do exactly what we want them to do, allow women to breastfeed while HIV+), the extreme level of extremes in all subject areas. She's a nutjob.
Oh, that's not that Sublime Kitty (random chick who added me after some discussion on another FB page) who said that. That's Peggy O'Mara, editor of (now defuct) Mothering Magazine.
ooohhhhhh. bummer about mothering. both the fear based media and the lack of print magazine.
Also, my much smarter than me husband commented to me this morning about how no body knows how nuclear power works, and the media is being dumb for spreading such crap info. Also.... all the stores here are sold out of potassium iodine :( Surrounded by dumb.
Not related? "Because magical fairies make it so!," I guess?
The sad thing is that this shit is getting around to HIV+ patients and so they stop taking their meds and shorten their lifespans by amounts that make you D: and all of this is before I even get to the anger of telling an HIV+ BFing mom to stop taking the meds. Because what the world needs and what those kids need, really *need*, is more HIV+ diagnoses!
Excuse me, I seem to have my rage on this A.M. "Science, bitches: it works."
What's really sad is the woman they interviewed for all those Mothering articles, who stopped taking her meds while pregnant and breastfeeding, passed HIV to her children and they have since all passed away. The most recent research says breastfeeding while HIV+ can be safe *if* you continue your meds.
Psh, research. Also, if that woman had just _fill in the blank_ she and her kids would be fine! Because it's always the patient's fault when they die, it's never because they have to deal with x thing, which the speaker is convinced doesn't exist or doesn't work that way.
...I want to hit the people who say this shit. So hard.
I'm thinking a lot of subscribers agreed. It's sad to see it all go downhill though because seventeen years ago, Mothering was my one oasis when I was 18 and pregnant with my oldest.
It did always have good info in it, but that info was unfortunately mixed with the more fringe stuff that just serves to make the more naturally minded among us look crazy by association.
I equate it with "my mom is a nurse," which always crops up to justify some non-evidence based claim or another someone is making in pregnancy/breastfeeding communities.
At least now I know my 2 c-sections were caused by Chernobyl.
What a pussy. No one was name calling or being irrational, just asked her for her sources. I guess if you're not willing to take the word of a no-name Kitty as gospel, you're not a worthy FB friend.
First cup: I just wanted to run naked through the streets screaming at the top of my lungs But I'm not so pretty and my coffee cup is small.
Second cup: The coffee cup falls quietly to the floor shattering and splashing everywhere.
Third cup: She was carrying a bag of coffee cups at her side gently rattling and rocking against her legs always threatening to break but never breaking.
